A scaffold builder is responsible for building up and breaking down temporary scaffold structures. A person who isn’t afraid to climb, walk, and work at high elevations can succeed in this role. Scaffolds are used in a variety of industries such as construction, entertainment, shipbuilding, mining, utilities, drilling, and more. Scaffold builders are responsible assembling and dismantling scaffolding structures that allow workers to access specific portions of a building to perform needed work.
These construction leaders take corrective action to prevent job hazards and keep their team safe from injury. Scaffold builders have flexible schedules and can work part or full time. They often travel to various jobsites and work outdoors in warehouses or on ship ports. While there are no formal qualifications needed to become a scaffolder, there are several routes you could take to help you pursue this career. You could complete a college course, an apprenticeship or apply directly to an employer for work.
Desirable skills for a scaffolder include:
- Ability to work confidently at heights
- Excellent hand-eye coordination
- Good level of physical fitness
- Awareness of health and safety
- Ability to understand technical drawings and plans
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
The responsibilities of a scaffolder include:
- Unloading scaffolding equipment on-site
- Ensuring a stable base for scaffolding
- Erecting scaffolding poles
- Fixing scaffolding to buildings or structures
- Laying planks for workers to walk on
- Fixing guard rails and safety netting
- Dismantling scaffolding when a project is complete
- Creating different kinds of platforms, from simple scaffolding through to complex structures such as suspended scaffolding, cantilever drops and temporary roofs
- Working on-site in all weather.

This means you must ensure that equipment is used in accordance with best working practice and any training provided, all of the organisation’s policies and procedures and the law and using, where applicable, any safety equipment or Personal Protective Equipment provided. You are responsible for ensuring that the equipment you use is maintained and can be used/operated at all times.
